Traffic Police Issue Challans as Motorists Halt for Selfies on Mumbai Trans Harbour Link

Mumbai, 15th January 2024: A total of 120 motorists have been issued challans by the traffic police within two days of the inauguration of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), commonly known as Atal Setu. This action comes as drivers have been stopping on the bridge to take selfies and photos, disregarding ‘No Stopping’ signs and warnings from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Despite a speed limit of 100 kmph on the bridge, authorities have observed a surge in motorists halting for photo opportunities, posing potential risks of accidents. The MMRDA, as the bridge owner, has alerted the traffic police to monitor and penalize violators. Strict actions, including the registration of offences under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, will be taken against those halting on the MTHL.
Since its inauguration on January 12, approximately 25,000 vehicles have used the MTHL. However, instances of vehicles parked on the service road and individuals treating the bridge more as a scenic spot than a transit route have been observed. Authorities consider this surge in motorists stopping for photos as temporary but are keen on avoiding risks associated with speeding on the bridge.
Transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar emphasized the need for strict adherence to rules and highlighted the presence of traffic police on the bridge. Additional commissioner of police (traffic) M Ramkumar mentioned the issuance of manual challans for those violating ‘no parking’ rules, with efforts underway to access CCTV footage for additional enforcement.
Joint Commissioner of police (traffic) Pravin Padwal urged motorists not to stop on Atal Setu, emphasizing the danger it poses to their lives and other road users. The traffic police have requested the MMRDA to install additional signage indicating ‘No Stopping, No Halting’ on the bridge to further communicate the regulations to commuters.
