IMD Issues Rain Warnings for Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Mumbai, and Chennai
Mumbai, 3rd September 2024: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for multiple regions, with Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Mumbai, and Chennai facing significant rainfall. Andhra and Telangana are dealing with severe flooding and train disruptions, while Mumbai and Chennai are also experiencing continuous rain.
Mumbai Weather Update
Mumbai is currently enduring persistent rain, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic delays. The IMD forecasts light to moderate rainfall over the next 24 hours with a mostly cloudy sky. Commuters should anticipate delays as local trains are running late due to waterlogged tracks.
The city’s drainage system is overwhelmed by the constant downpour. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is on high alert, monitoring areas prone to landslides and building collapses.
Chennai Weather Update
Chennai is facing heavy rains that have resulted in significant waterlogging across various areas. The IMD predicts ongoing rainfall, which may worsen the situation. The Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Chennai has announced the cancellation of several train services due to severe waterlogging, impacting commuters travelling to and from the city.
Public transportation in Chennai is heavily disrupted, with buses and trains operating at reduced frequencies. Schools are on alert, with authorities evaluating the situation before making decisions on possible closures. Parents and guardians should stay informed through announcements from the Education Department.
Situation in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the situation remains critical as heavy rains continue to cause widespread flooding. Over 140 trains have been cancelled, and waterlogged tracks have led the South Central Railway (SCR) to reroute several key services. The infrastructure damage is especially severe between Kesamudram and Mahabubabad in Telangana.
Authorities have deployed 26 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to assist with rescue and relief efforts. The IMD has predicted a slight decrease in rainfall intensity starting Monday morning, offering some hope to the affected residents.
As Cyclone ASNA weakens over the Arabian Sea, other parts of India are likely to experience varied weather conditions. Delhi is expected to see moderate rainfall with satisfactory air quality, while northeastern states, including Assam and Meghalaya, are on alert for isolated heavy showers in the coming days.
