Mild Earthquake Jolts Navi Mumbai and Panvel, Alarming Residents

Navi Mumbai, 26th November 2023: Navi Mumbai and Panvel residents were briefly shaken on Sunday morning as a mild earthquake, measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale, struck deep underground along Mumbai’s coastline. The seismic activity, occurring beneath the sea, prompted moments of panic as a low rumble and slight tremor reverberated through buildings.

The incident left residents in the adjacent areas near the creek unsettled, with concerns about the earthquake’s epicentre in the prone zone near the creek. It took several hours for government officials to provide clarity on the situation. Panvel Municipal Commissioner Ganesh Deshmukh officially confirmed the earthquake in the afternoon, citing reliable information from the observatory.

The earthquake, registering 2.9 in magnitude, took place at 9:50:54 on Sunday morning within 15 kilometres of the Navi Mumbai coastline. Fortunately, no major damages were reported. The affected region, developed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) through soil filling on the bay’s Kandalvan, had residents expressing fears of potential flooding during heavy rains.

While there were no significant damages reported, the earthquake stirred conversations among citizens about the vulnerability of the area to seismic activity. The brief tremors prompted residents in Kamothe to report a loud noise, leading many to open their windows to assess the situation. Similar tremors were noted in other CIDCO colonies, sparking discussions about the earthquake’s impact in the region.
