Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Hires Consultant to Identify New Water Sources Amid Growing City Demands

Navi Mumbai, 3rd October 2024: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has engaged a consultant to identify new water sources to meet the growing demands of the city, officials announced.

An expert committee, chaired by Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde, has also been formed to evaluate feasible options for improving the city’s water supply, according to a release from the civic body.

In light of the rapid development and projected population increase in Navi Mumbai, the municipal corporation has begun strategizing to ensure sufficient water availability.

The commissioner has submitted proposals to the Konkan Irrigation Development Corporation to tackle the city’s escalating water requirements.

Currently, Navi Mumbai receives around 450 million litres of water daily from the Morbe dam, situated near Khalapur in the Raigad district.

However, with several major infrastructure projects in progress, including the Navi Mumbai International Airport and various mass housing developments, the existing water supply is expected to be inadequate for a population projected to reach 4.42 million by 2055.

Acknowledging the urgency of the matter, the NMMC has appointed a preliminary consultant to explore new water sources.

A tender has been issued to select the consultant to address the complex challenges involved in implementing new water resource initiatives. This will encompass environmental studies, feasibility assessments, as well as legal and financial investigations.

Additionally, the expert committee, led by Commissioner Shinde, is examining viable strategies for boosting the city’s water supply. One significant suggestion involves utilizing wastewater from the Patalganga River and from the Tata Power Generation Station at Bhira, which could assist in meeting the city’s water needs.
