Thane Near-Miss: Birthday Banner Falls from Foot Overbridge, Sparks Safety Concerns
Thane, 13th July 2026: A major tragedy was narrowly averted on the Eastern Express Highway in Thane after a massive birthday banner installed on a foot overbridge at Teen Hath Naka came crashing down onto the busy road, hitting a passing motorcyclist and narrowly missing several other vehicles.
The incident occurred on Monday and was caught on CCTV as well as by commuters, with videos of the collapse quickly going viral on social media. The footage shows the oversized flex banner suddenly detaching from the foot overbridge and falling directly onto the highway, leaving motorists with little time to react.
The biker, who was struck on the head by the falling banner, managed to maintain control of his motorcycle and escaped with minor injuries. Other motorists travelling behind him also managed to avoid colliding with the fallen structure, preventing what could have turned into a multi-vehicle accident.
The banner was reportedly installed to mark a local birthday celebration. However, its collapse has sparked outrage among residents and commuters, who have questioned how such a large structure was allowed to be mounted on public infrastructure overlooking one of the busiest highways in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Citizens have also raised concerns over whether the banner had received the necessary civic permissions and if authorities had inspected its installation. Many criticised the apparent disregard for public safety, arguing that the incident could easily have resulted in fatalities had the banner landed on a larger vehicle or during heavier traffic.
Following the incident, civic authorities removed the collapsed banner and launched an inquiry into the matter. Officials are expected to examine whether the installation violated municipal regulations and identify those responsible for erecting it. Action is also likely against individuals found to have installed the banner without permission.
The near-miss has once again highlighted the recurring issue of unauthorised banners and hoardings across Maharashtra, particularly during the monsoon season when strong winds can loosen poorly secured structures. The incident has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of civic rules and accountability to prevent similar accidents in the future.
