Ajit Pawar Directs BMC to Install Protective Barriers in Mumbai’s Flood-Prone Areas Swiftly

Mumbai, 23rd January 2024: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has issued a directive to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to expedite the installation of protective barriers in flood-prone areas across Mumbai. This proactive measure aims to mitigate the anticipated risk of flooding in vulnerable regions such as Chembur, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, and other suburban areas of the city, especially during heavy rainfall or potential hazards.

During a ministry meeting chaired by Ajit Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister stressed the urgency of developing a rapid action plan to safeguard residents in flood-prone zones. The financial aid received from the Central Government for disaster prevention will be allocated for these protective measures. Pawar announced that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will oversee the reimbursement process, ensuring a swift and effective implementation of the initiative.

The meeting, was attended by key officials including Additional Chief Secretary of the Housing Department Valsa Nayar, Additional Commissioner of the BMC Ashwini Bhide, Principal Secretary of the Planning Department Saurabh Vijay, Secretary of the Finance Department (Financial Reforms) Shaila E., and Director of Disaster Management Appasaheb Dhulaji, focused on formulating a comprehensive strategy for disaster prevention in flood-prone areas.

Ajit Pawar emphasized the heightened risk of potential flooding in areas like Chembur, Ghatkopar, and Bhandup. To ensure the safety of citizens and prevent any loss of life or financial damage, Pawar instructed the BMC to prioritize the action plan and expedite the installation of protective barriers.

Pawar highlighted the significance of comprehensive inspections in areas susceptible to potential threats. The State Disaster Management Department, in collaboration with IIT Mumbai, has identified vulnerable zones. The BMC will coordinate with them to execute the necessary protective measures, utilizing the financial assistance from the Central Government.

Assuring efficient management of the reimbursement process, Ajit Pawar stated that the BMC, in collaboration with the State Government’s assistance and rehabilitation department, will ensure the expenses related to these preventive measures are covered. This initiative aims to enhance Mumbai’s readiness to face potential threats and protect the well-being of its residents.
