Baby Python Found Inside Janshatabdi Express Engine at Mumbai CSMT, Safely Rescued
Mumbai, 25th June 2026: A baby Indian Rock Python was rescued from the locomotive of Train No. 12052 Madgaon–CSMT Janshatabdi Express after the train arrived at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai early on Wednesday.
The snake was spotted inside Cab No. 2 of locomotive No. 22936 WAP-4 shortly after the train reached Platform No. 11 at 12:45 am. Loco Pilot N.K. Parsoya noticed the reptile and informed the relieving Loco Pilot, Omprakash Ram, following which railway officials were alerted.
Animal Welfare Officer Abhishek Ashok Thavre reached the spot and carried out the rescue operation. The baby python was safely removed from the locomotive at around 1:40 am without affecting train operations. It was later released into its natural habitat.
The rescued snake was identified as an Indian Rock Python, a non-venomous species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act. The species is commonly found across parts of India and plays an important role in maintaining ecological balance.
Wildlife experts note that the current season coincides with the hatching period for python eggs. With monsoon rains across Maharashtra, young reptiles often seek shelter in dry and protected spaces. It is believed the hatchling may have entered the locomotive while searching for refuge from the rain and was subsequently transported to Mumbai.
Officials said such wildlife encounters can occur during the monsoon season when animals move into human-dominated areas in search of shelter. Authorities advise citizens not to handle or harm snakes if encountered and instead contact trained rescuers or the Forest Department for assistance.
No injuries were reported during the incident, and train services remained unaffected.
