Metro Line 2B: Mumbai’s New Lifeline, Set for Completion by 2027

Mumbai, 13th January 2025: Metro Line 2B, a crucial part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) initiative to expand the city’s metro network, is set to become one of Mumbai’s key transit routes upon its completion. Designed to alleviate traffic congestion and improve access to expanding suburban areas, Line 2B will connect D N Nagar in Andheri to Mandale in Mankhurd, serving as a vital link between the eastern and western suburbs, covering areas such as Andheri, Bandra, Chembur, and Mankhurd. Once operational, the line is expected to attract over 10 lakh daily riders, making it the most heavily used metro line in the city.

Route: D N Nagar-Mandale

Construction Progress: 78% of the 23.6 km civil work is complete.

Completion Timeline: The project is planned to be finished in phases from mid-2026 to the end of 2027.

Depot Location: Mandale, with 97% of the depot construction already completed.

Stations: The line will feature 20 elevated stations, including ESIC Nagar, Prem Nagar, Indira Nagar, Nanavati Hospital, Khira Nagar, Saraswati Nagar, National College, Bandra Metro, Income Tax Office, ILFS, MTNL, SG Barve Marg, Kurla East, EEH, Chembur, Diamond Garden, Shivaji Chowk, BSNL Metro, Mankhurd, and Mandale Metro.

Implementation Challenges:
– Urban Constraints: Addressing issues related to encroachments, rehabilitation, and coordination with underground utilities.
– Logistical Challenges: Managing traffic on heavily congested roads during construction.
– Multi-agency Coordination: Securing necessary approvals and permissions from various departments and agencies.

To address these obstacles, MMRDA has adopted proactive planning measures, including risk assessments, mitigation strategies, and best project management practices.

Expected Daily Ridership: 10.5 lakh

Estimated Cost: Rs 10,986 crore
