Mumbai: Smart Electric Meters To Be Installed In Mumbai In Three Months

Mumbai, 27th December 2022: The BEST initiative has decided to install smart electricity meters in Mumbai to modernize the electricity distribution system. In the next three months, smart electricity meters will be installed in the homes of consumers. It has been claimed by the officials of the BEST initiative that customers will be able to get accurate information about electricity consumption. Currently, the testing of this smart meter is going on, and it is in the final stage. Meanwhile, the old meters of more than 10 lakh customers of BEST will have to be replaced.

The BEST initiative focuses on modernizing the power supply sector. As a part of that, the distribution system improvement plan is being implemented in the electricity department. Under this system, old meters will be replaced with new smart meters. This meter will work automatically. The smart meters will be directly connected to the control room of the electricity department. The most benefit of the smart meter will be to prevent electricity theft and electricity leakage, and electricity consumers will also get accurate information about electricity consumption.

The smart meter will help the control room of the electricity department to understand the technical failure in the power supply immediately. Also, the control room will be able to get information about the reason and the origin of the power supply in someone’s house. So the fault can be repaired immediately. Due to various reasons, there is a 60 per cent electricity deficit, and BEST is facing a big financial hit. Smart meters will help reduce this deficit to some extent. Three and a half thousand crores of rupees are expected to be spent on this scheme and a subsidy will also be received from the central government.

Thanks to a smart meter, electricity customers of BEST will get accurate information about electricity consumption online. A mobile app will also be made available for this purpose. The customer will be able to get information about how much electricity has been consumed in a month. Also, a prepaid meter facility will be provided in the smart meter. By estimating how much electricity is consumed in a month, the meter can be recharged accordingly. The facility of online payment of a monthly fee will be provided for recharge. The customer will be able to use only the amount of recharged electricity.

“Smart meters will be installed at BEST’s electricity customers in the next three months. Therefore, customers will get accurate information about electricity consumption and bill at the right time. This will help reduce customer complaints,” said Lokesh Chandra, General Manager of BEST Initiatives.
